Dividing decimals
Dividing with decimals might seem a bit tricky at first, but it gets easier with some practice. Let's break it down step by step:
- Understanding the problem: Let's say you want to divide 4.8 by 1.2. Here, 4.8 is the number you're dividing (the numerator), and 1.2 is the number you're dividing by (the denominator).
- Remove the decimals from the denominator: To make things simpler, you can remove the decimals from the denominator. You do this by multiplying both the dividend and the divisor by 10, so the denominator becomes a whole number. In this example, 1.2 becomes 12 when you multiply by 10. You also have to multiply 4.8 by 10, which gives us 48.
- Divide as usual: Now we can divide 48 by 12 just like we would with whole numbers. 48 divided by 12 is 4.
- Write the answer: The answer to 4.8 divided by 1.2 is 4.
Remember, when you multiply both the numerator and the denominator by the same number, you don't change the ratio between them. So the answer stays the same.
