Describe a mathematical system
40 How do you describe a mathematical system?
A mathematical system is like a game with rules. It has four main parts:
- Undefined Terms: These are the basic building blocks. We don't define them, but we use them to define other things. Think of them like the pieces in a puzzle. For example, in geometry, "point" and "line" are often undefined terms.
- Defined Terms: These are terms we explain using the undefined terms. It's like using puzzle pieces to make a picture. For example, a "line segment" can be defined as a line that are bound by two distinct endpoints.
- Axioms: These are statements we accept as true without proof. They are the rules of the game. For example, one axiom might be that a line can be drawn between any two points.
- Theorems: These are statements we prove using axioms and defined terms. For example, the Pythagorean theorem is a famous theorem in geometry.
Each part helps us understand and solve math problems!
